A lot of people throw around the term future soul, but New Zealand synth-songwriter Unmap is really living it.
Connecting the bass islands of Slow Jam RnB, Vocoder Synth Funk, Southern Hip-Hop and Cubist Beat Music, ‘Etude No.3 (Waiting)’ is a majestic, sweeping piece of work, one which connects perfectly with the futurist processes Hyperdub Records and their peers relentlessly explore.
If you get down with early era Joker, Darkstar’s debut album or the shimmering, mercurial wonk of Los Angeles Low End Theory movement and Glasgow’s LuckyMe collective, it’s going to be very easy to slip into Unmap’s state of mind. Trace elements of the sonic stained glass window motifs of Lapalux even.
